I Love Auctions

Tonight we attended the Sterling auction. I discovered this great little auction a few months ago. Generally it is the type of auction where you need to weed through the less desirable items to find the great ones. If you are the type of person that likes a bit of a challenge then this is the auction for you. On the other hand if you don’t like to dig and see the bigger picture then you wouldn’t like this particular venue. On occasion they do hold an official antiques auction. The next one will be in two weeks.

Although we didn’t hit the jackpot tonight we still managed to have a good time and find a few cool items. In my opinion even if you go to an auction and don’t buy a single thing it is still a good learning experience. Auctions are a good way to see how much items go for as well as keeping an eye on what’s hot and what’s not. The key to being successful is to set a price-point for an item and stick to it. We have all made the classic mistake of getting exited about an item and then overbidding on it. I guess you could call it as having a bit of auction fever and being a little delirious. I managed to get a few shots of tonight’s events with only a few weird looks from the crowd.

Last weekend when we went to the rummage sale I had one woman come up to me and say “Why are you taking pictures of a rummage sale when there are so many other pretty things in the world to photograph.” I then explained to her that I had started this blog about antiques, yard sales etc. She then changed her tune and thought it was a great idea. In my mind I think it is interesting to peer into this kind of secret society of people who thrive and live for getting a bargain. I admit to being one of these people myself and get a certain satisfaction for not only being green, but for truly seeing beauty in something that someone else may consider to be junk. I can’t tell you how many times I have brought something home from an auction or yard sale and have had my husband look at me and say ” Are you crazy.” I usually respond to him and say, ” Don’t worry when I am done with this piece it will be beautiful. And although I know he hates to admit it, after it is done he agrees with my initial thought.

As usual it is way past my bedtime so I will post again when I have another event. This weekend I may be hitting some new shops in Vermont. I will keep you all posted. Goodnight for now!!
